Previvors Book Published On Heels of New Nationally-Recognized Previvor Day

Women At Risk For Hereditary Cancers Gain Increasing Mainstream Awareness

BOCA RATON, FL – September 27th, 2010 – On the first National Previvor Day, women at risk for developing hereditary breast cancer are earning recognition from Capitol Hill to Main Street. Directly on the heels of this high-profile official recognition, Previvors: Facing the Breast Cancer Gene and Making Life-Changing Decisions will be published by Penguin on October 5th. It is the first comprehensive guidebook for breast cancer previvors: people who have not had the disease but have a predisposition to develop it.

On September 15th, 2010 the House of Representatives passed a resolution designating the last week of September National Hereditary Breast and Ovarian Cancer (HBOC) Week and the last Wednesday of September National Previvor Day (September 29th). The initiative was driven forward by Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz (D-FL), and organizations including Facing Our Risk of Cancer Empowered (FORCE), Bright Pink, and the Young Survival Coalition. A few days after HBOC week concludes, the book Previvors goes on sale, further heightening awareness among women at risk for breast cancer.

“In 2007, Time magazine called “previvors” a buzzword of the year,” stated Dina Roth Port, author of Previvors. “It’s amazing to see this community emerging on all fronts: From further advances in genetics and medicine, to recognition by Congress. I hope to bring this national dialogue to more high-risk women through the upcoming book.”

Revealing and timely, Previvors includes research based on Roth Port’s interviews with more than 70 leading medical experts. The book also tells the stories of Lisa, Mayde, Amy, Rori, and Suzanne—five friends who though healthy, had a high risk for breast cancer, and made the difficult, yet empowering decision to undergo prophylactic mastectomies so they could stop living in fear. Moving and heartfelt, their stories are interwoven throughout the book to bring all of the medical facts and details to life.

Previvors tackles important subjects high-risk women might face. From navigating health insurance coverage and finding the right medical team to evaluating risk-reducing options and dealing with the emotional ramifications of particular choices, Previvors is an invaluable resource for any woman facing decisions about her risk of cancer and future health.

I am a 28 yo mom to two toddler girls. I am 3 weeks po from a complete hysterectomy/ and removal of my ovaries along with a bilat mastectomy. I carry the brca 1 gene also, different strain though. I live in Stuart,fl. I was wondering if your sister still lives here? I would love to meet someone face to face whose been in my shoes. I’m having a tough time getting anyone near me to fully understand. My hubby is wonderful but it’s just not the same. I am in the process of losing my 39 yo sister to stg 4 breast and ovarian cancer and my family is still in denial that its genetic. the past 5 generations are filled with cancer but they’d rather turn a blind eye. Thank you for your honesty in your blog, I feel like in a way you are writing parts to my story too.
